TikTok Back on App Stores After Extended Suspension

TikTok has returned to both Apple’s App Store and Google Play after a nearly month-long absence, following a suspension that began on January 19. The removal of the app came in response to a law passed by Congress last April, which required TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to find a buyer or face a potential ban due to concerns over data security and its ties to China.

The law was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in mid-January, prompting the ban to go into effect. However, TikTok’s app listings weren’t restored until this week, after Apple and Google sought legal assurances from the U.S. government. According to reports, the tech giants were concerned about potential penalties under the sale-or-ban legislation, which could impose fines of up to $5,000 per user.

These concerns were addressed in a letter from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, which reassured Apple and Google that they would not face prosecution for distributing TikTok. Despite the restoration of the app, TikTok had previously introduced a sideloading option for Android users to bypass Google Play, while no such option was available for iOS users due to Apple’s strict policies.

As the 75-day delay on the ban expires, discussions are reportedly underway to facilitate the sale of TikTok to a group of U.S. companies, including Oracle and Microsoft. If completed, Oracle would oversee TikTok’s data operations, potentially preventing another ban.
